Poker: I need some tips against an opponent who bets and raise a lot?

NN7911 asked:

How do you bust an opponent who bets and raise a lot? Its very difficult to understand my opponent whether he/she is bluffing or just trying to steal the pot at every hand he/she plays. I win multiple tournaments online but i play bad playing against an opponents who bets and raise a lot playing every hands. I do bet or raise in a certain hands whether my hand is a strong hand or a mediocre or a low hand. I got to admit i make a lot of bad decisions against aggressive players. I also witness that when those type of players get busted they just sometimes start to play bad and risk most of their chips going all in or bluffing with nothing. Poker is hard, but i love the game. I feel like there is more to it to improve my game. I hope anyone can give me tips about this.

Start bluffing. It gets the other opponent freaked out and nervous just as it does to you. Don’t bluff every hand, bluff occasionally, whether you have a good hand. If you have a good hand start off confidently but not too confident, by the end go all in.

You need to learn how to read people, or just wait it out by playing safe then when you have a decent or great hand, slow play him. Let him raise up til the end and double him, depending on your opponent, going all in might scare him off. Try to lure the sucker in by acting like you have a bad or barely playable hand, but do it subtly.
    takes patience and practice

i believe he/she is bluffing. keep in eye on their face when they get their cards. You might see a smerk on his/her face. that is when u can tell they have a nice hand. Oh and btw- wear thick black sunglasses.

I’ve read lots and lots of books- you should also, from professionals that have won millions, retired, or so well off that now a day they write books and do it for fun and well they are masters. Poker is hard, alot of math, alot of luck with aggressive players and the balls to consider your chips “play money” and not real cash. Play on tables where you can afford to lose a certain amount of money over a given period of time. Realize that some people are going to beat you no matter what, and find people that are going to meet you at a table and ask this question!

you need to just play your hands, act weak to induce bets when you are strong, just don’t let the person dictate the game. I’ve played holdem for about 7 years now and the best thing you can do against an aggressive player is be patient, wait for your hand, then let him bluff or overplay his mediocre hands. I use to play a lot of heads up on Fulltilt, absolute, and pokerstars and I use to love playing aggressive players because they are so impatient, they forget how to play the game properly. Just play ur game. Also really watch and pay attention to aggressive player betting patterns, I notice when aggressive players are taking a stab they usually bet less than they will when the have a hand. Its hard to explain. I also recommend buying Doyle Brunson’s book Super System. I never read it but I know a lot of people who say its really helped their game.
    Hope this Helps

Players that are uber aggressive force us to gamble in order to beat them. Most of these types of players don’t have the other necessary skills mixed in with their aggressiveness to be winning players. But they sure do a lot of damage to other players because of the aggressive nature of their play!

Understand when you are playing this player that if you want to take him out you will have to gamble. You may have to risk it all on a 60/40 situation or else he will chop away at your chip stack with his aggressiveness and soon you won’t have enough chips to be a threat to anybody.

When I am in a tournament and one of these players is at my table, I usually decide between survival and staying out of his way or taking my chances and using him to double up.

If I have an average stack I usually choose survival but if I am small stacked I may just come all in over the top of one of his raises if I get a good hand.

Just don’t think you can play small pots with this guy because you can’t. So if you have an average hand and you really can’t afford to risk any of your chips to see a flop just stay out of his way.

Here are some strategies I use to counter their play:

Out aggro them pre flop by coming over the top of their raises when you have a top hand. The difficulty with this is that he may not pay you off on your good hands. But if you are small stacked he will almost always call your all in re raise. (remember these players are used to others making stands with small pocket pairs or ace rag so they may perceive the same kind of desperation from you.) I never understand why players choose mediocre hands to make a stand against bullies. We should be making a stand with above average hands.

Play the rope-a-dope when you have a good hand by letting them bluff all their chips to you. The difficulty with this strategy is getting enough good hands pre flop or seeing enough flops to finally have a hand good enough to flat call on every street.

Both strategies have their problems. But noone ever said poker was easy! I think if you play this type of opponent intelligently you should come out ahead over the long run.

If you use the right strategies against him, he’ll be the one making the difficult decisions, not you! What more could we possibly want in life!?

    Good luck!
