How to Win at Online Poker

Monday, April 27th, 2009
PKR Poker asked:

Playing poker online is fast becoming a way for many to enjoy the sport of poker without all the hassles of traveling to another state or getting out in all kinds of weather to find a casino. Many states in the US do not even have one casino with any type of table games, thus many individuals cannot just drive down the street to play a hand. They must go on vacation to find a casino, thus the main reason online poker is so popular. However, do people real win at online casinos? The answer is yes, but you must know how to play in the virtual world in order to win.

Online poker is pretty much the same as in a casino. You can play in a virtual world today and even in a 3D world, making the game even more enjoyable. The 3D games are practically like being there only without all the noise that you found at casinos.

To win at online poker games, you still play just about, like you would in a casino. You should start out by playing your highest hand at the beginning of the poker game. You should also remember the old saying, “know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold”. If you think, you have a bad hand, fold. This way you will not lose as much, because no one wins every time. Online, you can watch the player’s faces and learn if they are bluffing, it is better to fold than lose a huge amount of money.

As you enter a poker room, observe before joining in. What are the stacks? If they are higher than you wish to lose, then leave. You can find a room where the stacks are not as high and you can enjoy winning.

If you are losing, lower your bet. You do not always have to bet the max. This will also help you win while minimizing your losses.

Even though, you are playing online, try to get to know the other players. Learn how they bet, their strategies, etc…, by watching the game prior to joining in if possible. You must still learn how to outsmart the other poker players in the room if you wish to win.

Not only must you learn about the other players, but you must also learn how to bet. Betting defensively is the best option. Learn how to bluff your opponents. This is a great way to win at any poker game. Your bluffs may not work on the hardcore players, but new poker players will fall into your trap.

Eight Ways To Spot A Poker Bluff

Saturday, April 25th, 2009
David Walker asked:

There are probably more than eight ways to spot a player who is a consistent bluff in the game of online poker but the easiest to spot tells used with some frequency are described in this article.

1. The person bluffing thinks he can uses the “chat option” to his advantage. Keep a close eye on chatty players and what they are doing. Do they raise pots and chat away about not catching any cards only to showdown with an A-Q suited?

2. If a player raises before the flop, it shows for instance 3-3-9 and they quickly re-raise again, you may be up against a bluff all the way to the river. Before you call, be sure you feel confident you can take the pot with what you are holding.

3. If someone clicks their “sit-me out” button back “in” and jumps in suddenly as the cards are being dealt , then quickly calls or raises, the chances are they have run out of patience and are not playing a killer hand.

4. When a player with the lowest stack on the table goes all-in with absolutely nothing you can see as a relevant threat, you may have someone bluffing a pot with a “now or never” viewpoint.

5. The player that bets on the flop and then checks on the turn needs to put his money where his mouth is. If you have a good hand, force them to bet.

6. If you are playing against someone who is an extremely loose player and won’t let one hand slip by without a bet, who does he think he’s fooling? One player doesn’t get that many good starting hands.

7. You will know to watch for a bluff if you pay close attention to what he or she shows at the end of the hand. If the player raised before the flop only to show a 4-5 off suit at the end of the hand, they are almost dangerous. Act accordingly so that there is no next time for that foolishness.

8. They play every hand too quickly to put any intelligent thought into what their hand is capable of. The chances are they hardly ever do and bluff most hands they hold.

In conclusion, try to eliminate bluffers out of the game as quickly as possible as a good strong bluff can become a winning hand on the river. Ensure they don’t make it that far!

Catching Poker Bluffers

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009
Gil A, asked:

It’s essential when playing poker game to learn how to bluff and how to tell if someone else is bluffing.

The easiest way to catch bluffers is by looking at their betting patterns over a series of hands. Get as much information as possible, it will help you make your moves in the game and gives you serious advantage when the game becomes heated, but also you’ll need it to catch a person when they are bluffing. The more information on a poker players tendencies you have collected, the more chances you are to know when he is trying to make a bluff or not.

Pay special attention to player reactions to the cards he gets, good or a bad hand - facial expression, body movements and how much is your opponent talking. If he make on a very strong confident face, probably he is trying to bluff you into thinking that he has a strong hand. However, if your opponent becomes passive then probably he is trying to bluff you into thinking that he has a bad hand so that you will stay in.

If a player’s demeanor pulls a complete change from any of the other hands that they have won, you can probably pretty safely say that they are trying to bluff you. Remmember players who adopt fake poker face at the earlier part of the game and then use them to bluff you later on.

What is Poker Bluffing?

Monday, March 9th, 2009
Synapse India asked:

A Poker bluff can be defined as one of the useful tips to bet or raise inferior hand in order to bluff opponent and win the poker game pot. It is an effective way to be fool others by raising a hand you want others to think is better than what it really is.

Bluffing is considered as a poker strategy and it maximizes a player’s chances of winning. It increases your chances of winning the game and adds more fun and excitement into the game. Being a key moment in the online poker, bluffing is not used frequently as it is believed to be.

Besides adding a lot of fun and pleasure in the game, bluffing also increases your chance of getting the poker pot. If you don’t bluff, your tricks would be considered highly predictable and our number of wins would be expected to be affected. A bluff can work wonderfully when there is less chance of your winning the game or when all the cards have been dealt and you want to steal the pot.

In order to put fruitful bluff, a player needs to determine the different situation in which bluffing can bring good results. Following factors may help you to determine your bluffing while playing online poker game:

Nature of opponent:

Do not use bluffing if your opponent is weak or not that smart. This is a common mistake people usually make mistakes.

Opponents in Number:

It is not a good bet, if you bluff against three or more other players. It is effectively when you play against a single person as in this case poker pot becomes smaller.

Image of the table:

The success of your bluffing is entirely depended upon the image of a player. If he pretends to be a good player then his chances of getting caught is less than in comparison with others.

The Pot Size:

If the pot size is small, the chances of winning increase. Conversely, if you bluff successfully when the pot is large, your reward is much larger. You simply have to use good judgment when these situations arise.

Challenging Poker Bluffs

Saturday, February 28th, 2009
Ricardo asked:

Poker bluffs is one of the characteristics of dominant players. The skill lies in that they bluff when most people do not expect them to bluff. Even if someone tries to identify their bluffs, they pretend over again in such a way that others would get confused about whether they are playing true or bluffing. Poker bluffs keeps the other players guessing about the real motive of a player.

Poker bluffs are also meant to discourage other players about their reasons to keep staying in the table heads up regardless of whatever they hold; however, this technique might not work with tight players that are staying in the table with a solid reason. When making poker bluffs one should determine if their trick of bluffing might work with the person concerned. If the bluff is going to be made against the wrong player, the bluff might not elicit the kind of response that the player wanted and also, the bluff might get leaked which might possibly give a superficial picture of what the player is holding in the pockets. So, bluffing should be done intelligently against the right person failing, which there will be some real bad consequences.

Poker bluffs might be challenging for those that are waiting another card in the next draw. When such players are shot with skilled bluffs, they might suspect that their card is already blocked in the bettor’s pockets and might even fold. Sometimes a couple of re-raises might make them believe that the bettor has a good hand and they might feel that the price they will have to spend for the information of the next card is too much and they might fold without waiting to see their hand to improve anymore. This is one way by which poker bluffs are implemented.

Poker bluffs in the early stages of playing are done in some kinds of hands where it is considered to be better to have maximum players to fold. In such cases, the players might fast play with a couple of raises and re-raises eventually causing most with less worthy hands to fold. The people that are still heads up are going to be the real opponents. In a short-handed table it is going to be a bit easy to play odds and probabilities, because the opponent number is less. The identification of the real opponent is in most cases done by poker bluffs, but of the opponent has figured the bluff and if he has realized that he is in a better position, then possibly the smart opponent might pretend to slow play just to get the pot grow heavy enough.

Top Ten Poker Tips

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
Tim Godfrey asked:

No matter what sort of poker game you are playing in, there are a number of effective strategies you must follow in order to increase your chances of winning. I have provided below a list of the ten best poker tips to follow to keep the money rolling in your direction.

1. Know when to hold’em, and know when to fold’em.

Most beginners play way too many starting hands; in fact top players typically play between 20 to 30% of their starting hands. When you’re just starting out playing poker, you want to play poker, and that means staying in hands that aren’t very good just to be part of the action. But playing more doesn’t mean winning more. In fact it usually means losing more! Concentrate on higher value starting hands and help remove the luck element of the game.

2. Choose less skilful opponents.

If you want to win money choose your opponents wisely. Although this sounds obvious you should play at the betting limits where you stand a better chance of beating the majority of players. Move down in limits if you are having difficulty winning money. Don’t be greedy and always leave your ego at the door.

3. Understand player position.

Not only is it important to play strong hands, it is also important in what position you play them. For example, the ideal position is the Button, as you are last to act, and have the advantage of watching all of the betting action before you need to make a decision. If the action before you consists of a bet, a raise, and then a re-raise, and you, say, hold a pair of Tens, you might think that folding is the right decision.

4. Be unpredictable.

Variation and unpredictability can be advantageous. Most good players/professionals can spot a really loose player by waiting for the nuts and being patient. However, an even easier opponent is a tight player or ‘rock’, who plays only the Group 1 type hands. You need to change your game up, and let them see that you can run bluffs, and can play some lower value starting hands.

5. Don’t bluff just for bluffing’s sake.

Although most poker novices understand that bluffing is a part of poker, they are unsure exactly how. There’s is no set rule saying that one must bluff a certain amount of times – or at all during a game, but many players don’t feel like they’ve won unless they’ve tried a poker bluff that’s worked. Bluffs only work in certain situations and against certain people, and if you know a player always calls to the showdown, it is literally impossible to bluff that player. It’s better never to bluff than to bluff just for the hell of it.

6. Don’t play when in the wrong frame of mind.

When you play poker, you shouldn’t do it when your depressed, angry or simply having a bad day. You will start playing emotionally, not rationally, and as a result you won’t play your best. Likewise, if during a poker game, you lose a big hand or get sucked out on and feel yourself going on tilt, stand up and take a break until you feel calm later on. Good players will sense your mood and take advantage of it.

7. Watch your opponents carefully.

Always watch your opponents, especially when you are not in a hand. Watch how opponents bet and how much they bet and in what position are they betting. Learning how your opponents play is key. If you know that one player always raises in a certain position, and another has a poker tell when he bluffs and a third folds to every re-raise, you can use that information to help you decide how to play against them.

8. Pick the right game for your skill level.

The main reason why you shouldn’t jump into a $5 to $10 game after winning at $2 ro $4 is because as the stakes rise, so will the average skill level of the players sitting there. You want to be one of the best players at the table and if you’re making stacks of money at a lower level game, why move?

9. Don’t Call at the End of a Hand.

It may be worth seeing if a player really has the hand to attempt to gain information that will help you later on in the game, but if you really feel a player has the hand he’s representing and you’re already beaten, why give him even more of your money? These types of bets will add up over the course of an evening.

10. Read books and take notes.

Learn how be a better poker player. If possible try and keep notes on what works and does not work for you, and eventually you will come up with a style of playing that does work. Read as much as you can about the game and keep on the look out for online tips from the professional tournament players.

To Bluff Or Not To Bluff? That Is The Question.

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
John Woods asked:

Bluffing is the fine art of deceiving your fellow poker players into thinking you have a better hand that you have. The trick is knowing when to bluff.

When to bluff

When you are one of the last in the round of betting such as the dealer and everyone has checked. This will force a few out but maybe not all.

The flop is a poor one with no high cards or obvious possible flushes or straights. If you bluff now anyone hoping the flop might bring something to help their suited or consecutive hole cards make a flush or straight will think you have a high pair in the hole. As the flop is no use to them they should fold. The danger is if someone re-raises or stays in is that they really do have a high pair in the hole.

There are only a few players in the pot, its easier to bluff a few that a lot.

Your fellow players are tight players(only bet when they have a hand) if they don’t have a hand either they will stick to their normal game and fold.

You just won a strong hand. The other players will have your recent victory fresh in their mind and not be too keen to lose to you again so fold.

You must be careful when bluffing though, if someone stays in or re-raises you it might be best to fold, they could have a hand.

When not to bluff

Do not bluff if you have a lot of opponents, chances are at least one of them has a hand that can beat you.

Do not bluff if there are a lot of bad players on the table that will play and bet on every hand. Your bluff will not work on them and they are likely to make some kind of hand to beat you by staying in to the end.

Do not bluff if the flop has high cards in or possible straights and flushes.

And finally do not bluff if you just got caught bluffing, they will guess you might be at it again.

Poker Bluffing

Thursday, February 19th, 2009
Gil A, asked:

As anyone whose been around poker more than a week, you know bluffing an essential Strategy part of any poker game. It’s something that a lot of people talk about, but few do properly. The art of bluffing is something that takes alot of time and study to master. Here are some typical tips to help you bluff successfully.

Bluff when you are playing against players who have a tendency to fold quickly. If you bluff at early stage of the hand such as the pre-flop or the flop against a tight player who does not fold, you should critically consider not bluffing at this or a later round. Another occasion to Bluff is when \”someone\” might have made a good hand. An example is when the third of a suit hits the board. \”Someone\” might have a flush. If you bet as if you have the flush, the other players may believe you.

Caution from newer players who will regularly call bets regardless of the strength of their hand. That\’s because they are new to the game and they are happy to call down bets with mediocre hands. Therefore you should avoid trying to make bluffs against these players Even though you may present yourself as having a stronger hand, they simply may not care or not even notice.

Another tip is to do it quickly and confidently. Players can’t see your face while you’re doing it, like they could if you really were sitting across the table from them, but they can gauge how long it took you to come up with this maneuver based on how look it took you to execute it.

Last one is not to bluff too often, and try to adopt a pattern others will find difficult to see. players who have seen you bluffing recently, will register it. Try and limit your bluffs as much as possible and only use them in situations where you feel strongly that you will be able to force your opponent to fold. Never feel compelled to bluff because you haven’t done so for some time.
