Maybe they just don’t you to see how drunk or hung-over they are.

Part of it is for intimidation. They don’t want the other players to see what they are looking at.
It also helps hide there emotions by not tipping off the others that they have a good or bad hand.

Personally I can’t stand sitting at a table where the players have sunglasses on.
Some casinos used to ban wearing them at the tables. I’m not sure if that rule still exists.

Its so others cant read their eyes and so the player that is wearing them can look at the other players without being watched.

well, there’s a lot of reasons, first of all, they want to look good on TV(who doesn’t), secondly, they can’t stand the lights coming from the camera, or the camera-crew holding the lights, and last but not least, when the poker players fall a sleep, nobody know about it.

generally special lighting is used during taping and it prevents pignomisitisis.

because they are asleep most of the time waiting for players to place their bets

They wear them to hide tells given by where they’re looking. One of the most consistent tells in poker is that if the flop, turn, or river hits and your opponent glances for a second at his chips then he’s probably got a strong hand. This is often a reflex action, and you’ll see a LOT of players do it even at the professional ranks. Watch the WSOP and the WPT if you don’t believe me. Another tell is that you’re trying to look away from your opponent but your eyes keep sliding back to watch him, or the other way around. They’re all tells, and they can be avoided by wearing shades.

Almost ALL prof. players will tell you it’s all in the eyes. You can read your opponet by what he/she does with their eyes. It is an involuntary action that one has a hard time controlling, so they prefer to cover their eyes up then be conscience of it all the time. Watch your opponet when they check out there starting cards; do they look to the opponent to their left to see how many chips they have or do they look at their own chips? Do they look away or close their eyes? It most cases if you watch your opponent, after the flop, see if he/she looks down at their chips. This a good sign that they have something and you might want to reconsider betting in if you don’t have good starting cards. If they look to their left at their opponents chips, they are looking to see how many chips that player may have and are deciding whether that player would make a call if they themselves threw out a bet. This shows that that player doesn’t have the nuts and they should fold. WATCH the eyes…it’s all in the eyes!
